hi there,
Let me know what you think of the word 'symbiocracy' in describing
the following governmental system:
A system which has two parts, each a complete working system by
itself. The parts are intended to share the descision making and
power of the government evenly.
One part is exactly like the US tri-branch federal system, without
any initiative & referendum rights.
The other part is based on direct democracy. This direct democracy
is dependant to a large degree on home computers to vote.
I see the whole system to be a guided, responsible form of democracy.
So any advice on a single word name that is derived from latin or
greek?
thank you!

First of all, you have not explained how you coin the term ‘symbiocracy’. If it is ‘symbiosis’ + ‘cracy’, then ‘symbiocracy’ could mean the close and peaceful existence of 2 forms of governance. However, it does not say which 2 forms of governance. So it could mean any 2 forms of governance, not necessarily the US tri-branch federal system and direct democracy.
It appears to me that you are talking about democratic republicanism, where ‘democracy’ means true or direct democracy and ‘republic’ the American variety.
Stephen Neitzke too has essentially talked about a form of governance similar to yours – i.e. the US tri-branch federal system + direct democracy in concept, but he is extremely confrontational in the promotion of his ideas. He terms that form of governance as ‘True Republican Governance’ ( http://trg-polity.org/ ).
Btw, the word ‘symbiocracy’ has been used in this article ( http://cfpm.org/~majordom/memetics/2000/13756.html ). |

I appreciate your reply.
Yea, Steve N is too close minded to discuss anything with.
I don't think his 'True Republican Governance' is anywhere near the government I described, actually. He is in love with the old Roman Republic, even if it was cruel, corrupt and undemocratic compared with modern governments. He seems to think that the tribunes who represented the average man were not representatives and not susceptible to non-pleb influence, which they were.
So, anyway, if you think 'symbiocracy' is vague, which is probably true, then what would you recommend?
I will skim over that article you linked, it sounds interesting.
thanks

I thought that the best description for what you have in mind is Democratic Republicanism, but you are looking for a single word name.
One big obstacle we face here is that the American system is known as a republican form of governance. It does not have a single word name, as far as I know.
Now if we want to have one word for the 2 forms of governance you have in mind, then 3 elements have to be present:
republic (for lack of a better word) + demo + cracy = republico-democracy which does not sound nice.
Btw, I have no idea how your 2-part-1-system form of governance would work in practice when in conflict. Which part would have primacy over the other? Otherwise you would have a hung government and a constitutional crisis.
If, in such a situation, the democracy part have primacy over the republic part, then it is just a democracy or a true democracy to distinguish it for the other systems falsely calling themselves democracies (false democracy).
Best Regards

In terms of how this government would look, it can vary of course. To me, the underlying principle of trying to balance the power of government between representatives and the demos in a 50/50 ratio is a nice pseudo line of demarcation that may be used to describe future governments. It would be a vast improvement to the system we have now of lumping modern gornments together under the vague umbrella of "democracies".

Yes, it does sound odd, which is why I'd love to have a simpler word to mention in posts, essays, etc. I'd love to have a word that means "guide, nurture, lead, show the way, escort, guard, protect"-ocracy |
